About Us
The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club currently consists of six (6) Senior, seven (7) Junior teams, an additional eighty (80) participants in our Milo Have-A-Go Program and functions strictly within the parameters of Federal, State and Local Government legislation and our own internal policies and programs.
The club has been an integral part of the Geelong Cricket Association over its first century and hopes to continue to be so in the new millennium meeting the challenges of keeping the game of cricket at the forefront of sporting and leisure activities. The club achieved Good Sports accreditation in 2002, moving to level 2 in 2003 and has maintained level 3 since 2004
Cricket Structure
DIRECTOR OF CRICKET: Don Royce O.A.M
Past President, Life Member and the immediate former Chairman of Selectors of The Geelong Cricket Club, Don has returned to the club this season to oversee the running of all things cricket. Don will mentor all coaches, captains, players and administrators providing a life time of cricket knowledge to the group.
CLUB COACH: Bryan Thomas
Bryan comes from a successful and fruitful career as one of the premier fast bowlers in the Geelong Cricket Association and upon completion of his career, he became heavily involved with the Geelong Cricket Club as bowling coach. He has for a number of years coached G.C.A. junior representative sides, has an in depth knowledge of technique and training management programs and is widely regarded as one of the best fast bowling coaches in Victoria.
BATTING COACH: Mick Wood
Mick was one of Geelong Cricket’s premier opening batsman and his career typified intestinal fortitude, determination and a doggedness to succeed. Mick played in two premierships with the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club in 1999/00 & 2000/01. Mick’s role will be instructional, developing training regimes for individuals focused on technique, batsmanship and innings building.
CHAIRMAN OF SELECTORS: Max Ellis
A former First XI player and premiership winning Captain, Max’s passion for sport is unmatched. On both the cricket and football fields Max’s tenacity was there for all to see. Max, in this role, is responsible for chairing the selection committee, coordinating meetings, player communication and collating statistics and player performance critiques allowing the committee to pick sides with the highest amount of information available.
FIRST XI MANAGER: Tim Hibbard
A recently retired multiple premiership player and former junior coach, Tim’s role will be to support the players on and off the field on match days and at training, ensuring all the players need to focus on is their game, their role in the game and the end result.
T20 CRICKET DEVELOPMENT OFFICER: Andrew Green
Former president and premiership player, Andrew’s role will be to develop the T20 game at Newtown and Chilwell. T20 is the fastest growing market segment of cricket and to capture the market share of players and sponsors, Andrew will promote and develop Newtown’s involvement in many facets
N-FORCE JUNIOR DEVELOMENT SQUAD DIRECTOR: Tony Jefferies
The N-FORCE Squad is a hand selected development squad for players indentified as having the cricket talent and mental aptitude to play at the highest level. Previous players to come through this program include former Victorian leg spinner Brad Stacey, Tim Anderson (International Cricket Council Development Programmes Manager, Asia/Pacific) and a host of current Geelong Cricket Club 1st and 2nd XI players. Tony has a huge depth of experience as a player and mentor and he himself is a product of this program. Tony opened the bowling for the Geelong Cricket Club first XI for a number of years, following on from a successful career at N.C.C.C.
FIRST XI CAPTAIN: Ben Neville
One of the best batsmen in the GCA, Ben returned to his club of origin last season. Ben has played at international level in England and Canada and played premier cricket for North Melbourne. He is one of the most aggressive and stylish batsman in the competition and the highlight of his career, as a two time premiership player, was his innings of 151 in a semi-final, which was pivotal in securing the 1999/00 flag.
