NCCC 2017/18 – Pre-Season

Welcome to season 2017/18. As we leave 2016/17 behind, we can reflect that it was a relatively successful year in terms of putting into training, leadership and playing structures in place.

The First X1 playing a final was a just reward, but we now face the challenge of improving all facets of training and playing once again this season.

GCA clubs have taken notice of our improvement and as a result clubs will put more time and effort when they play NCCC.  We need to respond to this by further improving our game individually and collectively.

The fundamentals that we focused on last season, must become habit.

  • Our training effort & application must improve.
  • Our game understanding must mature.
  • Our learners must look to become leaders.
  • We all need to push ourselves to be better in 2017/18.

Since the end of 2016/17, we have been focusing on the following

  • Leadership & Coaching Structure
  • Recruiting
  • Training Programs
  • Turf Facilities (playing & training)

Our collective aim is still to provide the best cricket training programs & facilities at any local GCA club. The first year of our new leadership structure was relatively successful, enjoyable and rewarding.

We need to produce elite, modern, specific training programs, which are to be delivered by a variety of specialist coaches. The successful delivery of these programs will translate to NCCC producing outstanding cricketers, both senior & junior this season and in seasons to follow.

We want our programs & facilities to attract other cricketers to our club.

The plan for pre season 2017/18 is again to formulate these programs with the assistance of Damian Shanahan and all the specified coaches.

We have the following structure to skillfully deliver these programs through the pre season and into the season proper.

We are pleased to announce the following Leadership Structure for season 2017/18

Director Of Cricket – Devon Royce

Training & Performance Coordinator – Yves Rousetty

Coaching & Leadership Consultant – Damian Shanahan

Chairman of Selectors – Don Royce

1st X1 Captain – Shane Franklin

2nd X1 Captain – Devon Royce

Bowling Coach– Phillip Twaddle

Fielding & Catching Coach – Brendan Twaddle

Fitness, Conditioning & Activities/ Games – Adam Kalz

3rd X1 Captain – TBA

4th X1 Captain – Russell Mitchell

Spin Bowling – Luke Muller

The off-season sessions have commenced at Steve Blackfords indoor nets @ 12 Roxanne Place Newcomb with Damian Shanahan working with a few of our turf batsman.

The leadership group will come together over the coming weeks to redefine our roles for the coming season.

We want the leadership group to continue to learn how to train effectively by learning specific drills and training techniques from Damian.

As was the case last season, the pre-season is an opportunity for the leaders to set standards, understand our specific training aims that will then be brought into outdoor training, late pre season & regular season training.

We want all line coaches / leaders to be well aware of their roles & responsibilities & the programs they will deliver in the coming season.

A select group of players will again work on their individual skills and benefit from one on one time with Damian.

We will have 3 players per hour (6 in total for the evening) so that Damian’s tuition & coaching is specific and effective.

The Monday venue does not lend itself to large numbers and our aim should be to progressively provide specific & worthwhile coaching to current turf squad players in controllable numbers.

These sessions are for the whole club playing group and we will formulate the training format in our Monday night sessions.

Friday August 4 – 6pm-7:30pm

Friday August 11 – 6pm-7:30pm

These early sessions will be about putting into practice what we have formulated in our Monday night sessions.

There will be a strong focus on fitness & fielding.

The club is pleased to announce the signing of Shane Murdoch to NCCC at Batting Coach for season 2017/18. Shane brings a wealth of experience having played & coached at a number of Victorian clubs (recently Bendigo league), as well as playing in the UK in years gone by (same league as the skipper). Please make an effort to introduce yourself to Shane when you get the opportunity. He is a ripping bloke, with plenty of knowledge and experience to pass on.

More info to come on our international player(s) and other recruits.

The club is extremely fortunate to have Graeme Taylor appointed as our Head Curator this season. GT’s knowledge, skill and experience as a curator will ensure that we have outstanding match day wickets this coming season. Former club coach Marc Carson will be doing the practice wickets this season and we look forward to some improved turf surfaces for training this year.

The change room refurbishment is complete and we have elite, modern changing rooms with meeting room, lockers, gym, ice baths that is the envy of all clubs in Geelong.

The challenge is there for all of us to improve again this season.

Effort, application and standards will need to lift to another level for us to continue to grow at training and during a game.

We need to be keen & enthusiastic to build the excitement, belief and confidence within the playing group.

We want our players to set the standards early with regards to communication, reliability, effort and attitude.

Basic player standards for training, playing, social behavior and club involvement will be outlined in the coming weeks.

Lets start to build momentum now and we will be ready to go when the season proper begins.

Go Two Blues!

Fresh from his success as player of the match in last summer’s Bendigo District Cricket Club’s final, Shane Murdoch has joined up with the Two Blues as batting coach this summer.

“Shane is a great off-season gain for us,” said Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club president, Frank Tuskes.

“His performances for Eaglehawk in Bendigo all summer were outstanding and he topped that off by taking 4-50 to win the Taylor-Walsh medal.

“So as well a welcome addition to our top-order, his will be handy with the ball.

“Additionally, he’s had a lot of cricket experience both in Australia and overseas and that’s the sort of knowledge we want him passing on to our players, particularly the younger ones we are developing as the future of our club.”

Murdoch scored 312 runs and took 13 wickets for Eaglehawk’s First Xl after a late start to the season.

His appointment completes the Two Blues’ coaching set-up for 2017/2018:

Director of Cricket -Devon Royce

  • Chairman of Selectors – Don Royce
  • Training & Performance Co-Ordinator – Yves Roussety
  • Coaching & Leadership Consultant – Damian Shanahan
  • Conditioning & Activities – Adam Kalz
  • Fast Bowling Coach – Phillip Twaddle
  • Batting Coach – Shane Murdoch
  • Fielding Coach – Brendan Twaddle
  • Junior Co-Ordinators – Algernon Johannes & Aaron Croft

“All these people are of the best quality to lead our club on the field at both the senior and junior level,” Frank Tuskes said.

“The other thing they have is passion and that is important in a club where the emphasis is on developing our younger players and growing what is already one of the biggest junior campaign in the region.”

The Two Blues First Xl finished sixth last year, and the club was sixth in the club championship.

New Change Room Facilities

The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club welcomes the official opening today of the new facilities at Queens Park that we share with the Geelong Amateurs Football and Netball Club.

The state of the art facility has only been achieved through the hard work of many wonderful volunteers, and also with the encouragement and support of the City of Greater Geelong, and other generous sponsors. It shows what can be done when a community comes together.

We hope the footballers, both the home side and visitors, enjoy these facilities, and we look forward to also using them when cricket season rolls around in 2017-2018.
